Program Overview
To prepare students for the future of medicine, KansasCOM trains student doctors with an osteopathic approach to medicine that is comprehensive and innovative—considering all the individual requirements of the student and the profession.
Diverging from the traditional approach seen in many medical schools, our Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program offers students unique and continuous exposure to interactive learning environments. Through a comprehensive curriculum that includes standardized patient encounters, human-patient simulations, modern medical technology, interprofessional education activities, an ultrasound program, and clinical skills labs, our students gain practical and essential experience in identifying and addressing patient needs.
Mentorship also plays an important role at KansasCOM. Students will have multiple opportunities to work with and learn from experienced professionals in Wichita’s medical community, academic faculty, and even other students in peer-to-peer mentorships.
KansasCOM’s DO program provides students with a foundation to work within any sector of health care.
We’ve developed a curriculum that can empower a community of lifelong learners and problem-solvers, capable of addressing challenges that the medical field has yet to encounter. One way we do this is by placing an emphasis on collaborative, interactive, and case-based learning. We also emphasize hands-on clinical education in years three and four to provide students with meaningful opportunities to gain real-life experience with patients from our partnerships with local physicians, hospitals, and clinical systems.
Our osteopathic medicine program consists of four years of coursework and fieldwork, culminating in the acquisition of a degree. Our curriculum is aligned with national standards and is meticulously crafted to align with DO and MD published information on potential board exam topics. We place special emphasis on collaboration with patients to promote health and wellness, the identification and treatment of illnesses, and the treatment of each patient in the context of the wide variety of factors that influence health.
