Fundamental Experience for Your Future
KansasCOM is committed to providing osteopathic medical students with a first-rate clinical education by immersing them in real-life clinical education experiences. We maintain reliable and trusted partnerships with local physicians, hospitals, and clinical systems to ensure enriching, meaningful, and effective training sites, particularly during your clinical rotations.
Clerkship Philosophy
Our students have successfully traversed the difficult path to clinical education, developing a solid understanding of foundational biomedical sciences that is critical to success in their career. Mastering the skills of patient care, empathy, and professionalism has taken on new importance in today’s professional development toward becoming a competent physician.
KansasCOM and the clinical education team have developed a portfolio of rotations to give you the tools necessary to achieve a quality residency training program. The third year of medical education consists of nine core clerkships through our affiliated clinical sites throughout Kansas and beyond. The fourth year provides an opportunity for elective and sub-internships, allowing you to determine your field of passion and audition for residency positions.
Third and Fourth Year Curriculum
Clinical clerkships are also referred to as rotations, clerkships, or clinical experiences with a teaching physician referred to as a preceptor, attending, or faculty.
There are nine required core clinical clerkships offered in the third year as well as an opportunity for an additional elective and a dedicated COMLEX study block. These clinical experiences reinforce and build upon the foundational biomedical science concepts taught in the first two years of medical school. Each of these clerkships includes a one-week on-ramp/off-ramp followed by a four-week clinical rotation. The on-ramp/off-ramp provides time for didactic learning and other practical learning experiences both in person (where possible) and virtually, preparing you to excel in your rotations. This week also provides time for COMAT testing and remediation where necessary.
We offer our third-year clerkship experiences in both urban and rural settings. The unique needs in these care settings are equally important in creating holistic patient care and educational experiences. We hope that you will choose clerkships taking advantage of these differing opportunities.
