Dr. Durrett received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in 1989. He then completed a one-year rotating internship at Still Regional Medical Center in Jefferson City, Missouri and returned to Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and Parklane Medical Center to complete his final four years of postgraduate training in general surgery. He was twice elected as resident of the year for his teaching excellence provided to interns at Parklane Medical Center.

Dr. Durrett is board-certified in general surgery, a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a fellow of the Federation of State Medical Boards, a fellow of Osteopathic Graduate Medical Education, and served as an oral and practical examiner for the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. He currently serves as a member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Surgery Liaison Committee, as the Kansas Commissioner for the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, and as a member of the Kansas Board of Healing Arts on the Disciplinary Panel along with the Physician Assistant Counsel and other committees. Also for the Kansas Board of Healing Arts, he served on the osteopathic review committee for 17 years before becoming a board member. He has a very strong knowledge of standard of care ethics in Kansas healthcare law from his 27 plus years of working at the Board
