Since September 2025, he has served as the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Kansas Health Science University Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine
Dr. Martin is a product of Oklahoma who proudly identifies as a board-certified osteopathic family physician and medical educator.
Dr. Martin after graduation from Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy in 1973 and practicing at the osteopathic hospital in Enid OK, Dr. Martin entered medical school at Oklahoma College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in 1976. After graduating he completed a combined Primary Rural Training program at a consortium between Oklahoma Osteopathic Hospital and Enid Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Martin practiced full scope family medicine in Enid for the next 18 years, including supporting the clinical education of students and residents. Seeking an opportunity shared with his wife for more than a decade to enter medical education full time, he moved to Tulsa, OK in 1997 where he practiced with Springer Clinic and taught in conjunction with OSU-COM for two additional years.
Beginning a full-time medical education career in 1999, Dr. Martin professional education journey included his roles as a professor of family medicine on the faculty of 6 colleges of osteopathic medicine. Beginning as the Chair of Family Medicine at Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine, he transitioned to Nova Southeastern University advancing there to Associate Dean of Medical Education and later as both Associate Dean and/or Vice Dean rank at two other institutions over the next decade.
Dr. Martin successfully served as the founding Dean for two new osteopathic colleges of medicine, beginning with Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Denver, CO in 2006 and Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Lynchburg, VA in 2012.
Dr. Martin retired from full-time educational and clinical efforts in 2020 after serving his last two years as the Interim-Dean of the KCUMB College of Osteopathic Medicine Campus in Joplin, MO. He currently supports medical education for future physicians as a Clinical Professor of Family Medicine for OSU-COM at the Cherokee Nations.
Dr. Martin has had the honor of serving on the boards of multiple Osteopathic Organizations, key of which are the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association (OOA) and the American College of Osteopathic Family Medicine (ACOFP), each of which cumulated with being elected to serve as President. During his career he has served on multiple regulatory and legislative boards, task forces and bureaus for the AOA, the ACOFP and in Oklahoma, Iowa, Virginia, and Florida.
Dr. Martin has been blessed by having the opportunity to provide medical services, lead and participate in medical outreach events across the globe.
A Health Policy Fellow with extensive experience at state levels as well as federal in Washington, D.C. Dr. Martin has served on the American Osteopathic Associations Federal Health Council over the past two decades and currently chairs the Osteopathic Political Action Committee (OPAC) for the AOA.
Dr. Martin has been married to Sherri Martin, a Past-President herself of the Advocates to the AOA and Auxiliary of the OOA. They have three children, R. Shawn Martin, the CEO of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Natasha Bray, D.O., the Dean for Oklahoma State University-College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Cherokee Nation, and Amanda Martin, D.O. an orthopedic surgeon who is one of the physicians for MLS and the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team. All 3 of the physicians in the family are graduates of OSU-COM. He has 4 grandchildren, Elliott, Preston, Parker and Payton.
