William Travis Engel is an accomplished physician with executive and clinical leadership experience. He has served as pediatric faculty and a clinical preceptor for multiple academic institutions. He has a deep background in clinical rotation design, curriculum development, and physician coaching.
Dr. Engel most recently served as Senior Medical Director and Department Chair of Pediatrics for Centra Medical Group in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he grew the pediatric department and expanded pediatric services across the region. He held numerous leadership roles during his tenure, including membership on the Medical Executive Committee, chair of the hospital's Professional Practice Committee, and chair of the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC), where he helped guide the family medicine residency to achieve osteopathic distinction. He was twice recognized as Faculty Educator of the Year by the family medicine residency and oversaw pediatric clinical rotations and fourth-year selective experiences for the institution.
Dr. Engel's commitment to community health extended beyond the hospital walls. He served as chair of the EMS Liaison Committee at Central Virginia Community College (CVCC), Associate Medical Director for the Lynchburg Fire Department, and was an active advocate for improving pediatric care throughout the region, including supporting the state's regional response to the measles outbreak.
Nationally, Dr. Engel serves as National Faculty Chair for the COMAT Pediatrics exam and has been involved with the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME) in various capacities since 2019. He maintains a particular interest in the role of high-stakes examinations in evaluating student progress toward licensure and independent physician practice.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Engel is an avid endurance athlete who has completed multiple 70.3-distance triathlons. He and his wife are the proud parents of three children, whom they enjoy supporting in wrestling, tennis, lacrosse, band, and theater. Dr. Engel and his family are thrilled to become part of the Wichita community.
